D.C.’s medical cannabis program continued its upward climb in June, with patient registration, sales, and overall participation all remaining at record levels, according to the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration’s latest Medical Cannabis Program report.
Patient growth remained strong. Total registered D.C. resident patients rose to 131,133 in June, up from 123,826 in May. Of those, 24,765 made at least one purchase during the month, generating 68,744 unique sales. In-store activity accounted for most transactions, with 66,650 unique in-store sales, while delivery accounted for 2,094.
D.C. resident patients spent a combined $4,044,193 in June, down slightly from $4,164,888 in May. The average sale held steady at $59, with in-store averages also flat at $57 and delivery averaging $126.
Reciprocity and temporary patients also remained important to the market. Non-D.C. resident patients using reciprocity rules made 2,354 unique purchases in June, up slightly from 2,349 in May, and generated $454,463 in sales. Maryland remained the top state for reciprocity patients at 902, followed by Virginia at 825.
Self-certified temporary patients, typically out-of-state visitors, also posted strong numbers. The category saw 12,849 registrations in June, with 13,936 unique patients making a purchase. Temporary patient sales totaled $2,075,466 for the month. Virginia still led temporary registrations by a wide margin at 4,237, followed by Maryland at 1,690.
Industry-wide sales rebounded in June. Total program sales across dispensaries, cultivation centers, and manufacturers rose to $10,381,484, up from $10,021,299 in May. Dispensary sales dipped slightly to $6,574,122, but cultivation center sales climbed to $853,615 and manufacturer sales rose to $2,953,747.
Compared with June 2025, total sales were up from $8,432,503. Dispensary sales, cultivation center sales, and manufacturer sales all increased year over year.
Flower and bud remained the top-selling category by dollar value, generating $3,325,216 in June on 736 pounds sold. Vape cartridges were the second-largest category at $1,229,214, followed by infused edibles at $788,283 and raw pre-rolls at $769,748.
Enforcement activity also increased. The Board recorded one violation in June, matching May, but scheduled inspections rose sharply to 27 from 13. Two unlicensed facilities were closed during the month: Smoke Island at 4905 Wisconsin Ave. NW on June 4 and Top Mart at 3109 MLK Ave. SE on June 12. Cannabis waste destroyed jumped to 4,214 pounds from 1,420 pounds in May.
