A Guide to D.C.’s Medical Cannabis Lounges and Summer Gardens

As Maryland and Virginia compete on price and proximity, Washington, D.C.’s legal medical cannabis market is carving out its own unique edge: the social experience.

Thanks to legislation passed in 2023, D.C. stands as the only jurisdiction in the DMV—and one of only nine nationwide—where adults can legally purchase medical cannabis and consume it on-site in an attached lounge or outdoor “summer garden.” Formerly gray-market “I-71” operators who transitioned into the legal market are leading the charge, reviving the city’s community-driven cannabis culture with comedy shows, elevated yoga, and high-end consumption setups.

Whether you’re looking for a pre-game spot, an alternative to an alcohol-focused bar, or a place to work remotely with a joint, here is your guide to the District’s top social cannabis destinations.

How D.C. Cannabis Lounges Work: What to Know Before You Go

  • Patient Registration: You must be 21 or older. If you don’t have a medical card from D.C. or a reciprocal state, you can self-register as a D.C. medical patient on-site at any dispensary. The process takes under 10 minutes.
  • On-Site Purchases Only: BYOC (Bring Your Own Cannabis) is not permitted. All products consumed in the lounge or summer garden must be purchased from the hosting dispensary.
  • No Alcohol or Tobacco: City regulations strictly prohibit alcohol and tobacco consumption inside cannabis social spaces.
  • Amenities: Indoor lounges are required by the District to install upgraded, high-efficiency ventilation systems to handle heavy smoke.
