Virginia moves to paperless medical cannabis certifications starting Dec. 1, 2025

Beginning December 1, 2025, all medical cannabis certifications in Virginia will be issued exclusively through the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority’s (CCA) new CCA Portal, replacing paper forms. The move is designed to simplify the process, enhance security, and make access more convenient for patients and practitioners alike.

Patients with existing certifications do not need to take any immediate action. Current certifications—whether paper or digital—will remain valid until they expire or a new certification is issued through the portal.

The CCA Portal allows practitioners to create new or renewed medical cannabis certifications digitally. Patients can then access, save, or print their certifications from any device, including smartphones, tablets, and computers. Practitioners can also print copies when necessary.

“The new CCA Portal is an important step forward for Virginia’s medical cannabis program,” said Jamie Patten, Acting Head and Chief Administrative Officer of the CCA. “It improves convenience for patients and practitioners while ensuring stronger safeguards for sensitive information and greater confidence in the medical cannabis certification process.”

Patients and practitioners with questions about the transition can contact the CCA at medicalcannabis@cca.virginia.gov.
