Cannabis workers at another Apothecarium Dispensary in Salisbury, Maryland, decisively voted today to join the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 27. This win follows months of organizing efforts focused on securing better pay, job security, and improved working conditions.

This marks the third successful unionization vote for Apothecarium locations in Maryland this year. Workers in Cumberland and Burtonsville previously voted unanimously to join UFCW Local 27 and UFCW Local 400, respectively.

“We are so proud of these workers and the fight they have waged,” said Local 27 President Jason Chorpenning. “Cannabis dispensaries across Maryland gross over $1 million a month at most locations, while paying workers just over minimum wage. Workers deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and paid a living wage with good benefits. It is our job to lead the fight for these workers.”

The Cannabis Workers’ Rising Program, a branch of the UFCW International Union, spearheaded the organizing campaign in Salisbury, fostering strong worker relationships. Local 27 collaborated with the program and employees to hold informational meetings, spirit weeks, and events to rally support.

This victory reflects the growing national trend of unionization, with Gallup polls showing 67% of Americans approving of labor unions. Workers are increasingly recognizing their worth and exercising their right to form unions for a stronger voice in the workplace.

“Participating in and winning the election here has been an incredible experience,” said budtender Harrison Schaire. “It’s truly meaningful to have participated in such a fundamental and historic institution in our democratic society with so many wonderful people. This is one of the stories in my life I want to pass down.”

With this latest win, UFCW Local 27 strengthens its commitment to improving conditions within the rapidly expanding cannabis industry. The union currently represents workers in 11 dispensaries across Maryland and Delaware and is prepared to negotiate a robust contract for the Salisbury Apothecarium employees.
