Frontline employees at the gLeaf Cannabis dispensary in Frederick have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to form a union with UFCW Local 27, following many of the states workers actions in the past year. The workers are seeking to address concerns about job security, fair pay, safer working conditions and the need for a stronger voice in workplace decisions.
According to the workers, ongoing changes and disorganization following a company transition have created instability and left them feeling disregarded. They are now calling for stability, respect, and a seat at the table to negotiate their working conditions, according to a press release.
gLeaf is owned by The Cannabist Company, a major player in the U.S. cannabis industry, with a substantial network of facilities.
“We are the union for cannabis workers, and we’re proud of the hardworking team at gLeaf who came together to demand a better future,” stated UFCW Local 27 President Jason Chorpenning. He emphasized the profitability of cannabis companies and the need for workers to receive fair compensation, benefits and safe working environments.
More recently, unionized staff at Story cannabis dispensary, who are part of UFWC Local 400, rejected a contract offer and may strike for higher pay.
UFCW Local 27 represents thousands of workers in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region, including a growing number in the cannabis sector. The union has been actively involved in organizing and legislative efforts to secure workplace protections for cannabis employees. The gLeaf workers in Frederick join a growing movement of cannabis workers nationwide who are pursuing unionization to improve their working lives.
