D.C. legal weed market showing signs of severe downslope in new report

September cast a dire shadow on D.C.’s medical cannabis market. Overall sales were the second lowest of any month in the last four years of tracked sales. The program only netted $3.88 million in total revenue.

Historically, sales in September dip and return to normal in October, but the market expansion this year means that more dispensaries than ever are selling medical weed in D.C., and yet sales are not rising.

This is the first month this year that sales have dipped below $4 million despite the addition of a few new dispensaries. Patients served also fell by almost 1,000 in just a month, practically erasing the growth of the last four months.

Overall patients registered grew by over 600, but that rise did not convert to an increase in sales. Both manufacturer and cultivator sales also fell by over $100,000.

The number of products sold fell in multiple categories but the amount of money generated increased also signaling an increase in patient prices for products such as vapes and infused edibles.

Sales for infused prerolls and concentrate fell by close to or over 50%. Kief was the only product that saw a rise in sales.Sales in every other product category fell. September numbers cast a very dark shadow on the D.C. market if October does not show improvement.

  • 377 lbs of cannabis flower was sold in September.
  • 2,580 lbs of cannabis waste was destroyed.
  • 4 inspections were conducted of licensed facilities.
  • 3,240 patient registrations will expire by New Years.
