How to stay informed as Virginia gears up for a pivotal year in legal cannabis

Virginia lawmakers are preparing for what is expected to be a consequential year for cannabis policy as the 2026 General Assembly session approaches, with advocates and regulators signaling that cannabis-related legislation will be a major focus in the months ahead.

Cannabis is widely expected to be a key topic during the upcoming session, as lawmakers revisit issues surrounding regulation, enforcement, and the future of Virginia’s stalled adult-use retail market. While no single bill has yet defined the agenda, state officials are encouraging industry stakeholders and the public to closely follow legislative developments as proposals begin to take shape.

Virginia residents can monitor the session through the General Assembly’s official website, which provides access to current laws, legislator directories, committee meeting schedules and general session information. The state’s Legislative Information System (LIS), accessible through the same portal, allows users to track specific bills, read summaries, review legislative actions and watch committee meetings live as they unfold.

For those unsure who represents them in Richmond, the “Who’s My Legislator” tool enables users to identify their state senator and delegate by entering their address, along with direct contact information for each office.

The Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) is also preparing for an active legislative year. The agency has announced that it will provide updates on cannabis-related legislation during its Board of Directors meetings, offering insight into how proposed bills could affect the regulatory landscape. The next CCA board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2026.
